Vowel sounds that are composed of more than one vowel are the most difficult phonics concept to teach and learn because there are so many variations. We have found it easier for students to start with the regular double vowel pattern that follows the rule, "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." This is the most common sound for any double vowel. Once students have mastered these cards, then we very carefully begin to introduce Set 7 with the irregular vowel units. .
